Under-glaze

Applied to the raw body, then glazed and fired over. It is the method to choose when the piece will be washed daily for years.

How it wears

The most durable of the three. The mark sits under the glaze, so dishwasher cycles wear the glaze, not the mark.

Smooth. The glaze runs unbroken over the mark, so it cannot be felt.

What it cannot do

  • Adds one full kiln cycle to the lead time, because the piece is fired twice after marking.
  • Minimum glyph height is 3 mm; finer strokes blur as the glaze melts and moves.
  • Colour range is limited to the oxide palette — no full-colour artwork.
  • On dark glazes the contrast is weak. We show you the pairing before you order.

Against each glaze

Clearest on Chalk and Oat. On Stone and Charcoal the mark reads weakly — the configurator warns you before you commit.

  • Chalk · Strong contrastThe mark is clearly legible from normal viewing distance.
  • Oat · Strong contrastThe mark is clearly legible from normal viewing distance.
  • Sand · Moderate contrastThe mark is legible, though softer than on a paler glaze.
  • Stone · Weak contrastThe mark reads quietly and may be hard to see in low light. Choose another glaze or method if legibility matters to you.
  • Charcoal · Weak contrastThe mark reads quietly and may be hard to see in low light. Choose another glaze or method if legibility matters to you.
