Cut after the final firing, so it needs no extra kiln cycle and turns around fastest. The finest of the three — it holds detail down to 1.5 mm.

How it wears
Durable — the mark is a physical groove, not a coating. The glaze is broken where it is cut, so the recess feels rougher than the surrounding surface and can hold traces of coffee or tea over time.
Noticeably rougher inside the mark. If you run a finger over it you will feel the edge.
What it cannot do
- The glaze seal is broken inside the groove. We do not recommend it for pieces that will hold acidic liquids for long periods.
- Single tone only — no colour.
- On Chalk the tonal difference is small; the mark shows mainly as texture.
- Adds two to three working days rather than a kiln cycle.

Against each glaze
Works on every glaze in the range. Contrast is highest on Stone and Charcoal, lowest on Chalk.
- Chalk · Weak contrastThe mark reads quietly and may be hard to see in low light. Choose another glaze or method if legibility matters to you.
- Oat · Moderate contrastThe mark is legible, though softer than on a paler glaze.
- Sand · Strong contrastThe mark is clearly legible from normal viewing distance.

Blanks we do not offer it on
- Handleless Cup 200 ml — This piece is held directly against the palm. A laser groove is felt every time it is picked up, so we leave it off this blank.
- Wedding Pair Cup Set — This set is finished with a hand-applied lustre band at the rim. Cutting through it would expose the metallic layer, so we do not laser etch this blank.
